The cutting of the cake is a major event at weddings, symbolising the sweet union of a couple.
DESSERTS WITH A BOW
This cake maker is your one-stop shop for customised wedding cakes and edible favours, as well as candy corners and dessert tables. Couples sit down at consultations with the Desserts with a Bow team, who design cakes in accordance with the wedding’s theme.
AESTHETICS
If you’re after picture-perfect cakes — stuff that Instagram was made for — look no further than Aesthetics. The handcrafted cakes come with elaborate decorations, and are ideal for imaginative couples who want to go beyond traditional sweet treats. The cake maker can also create candy bars and dessert tables at events and weddings.
MS B’S CAKERY
Ms B’s Cakery is founded by Hong Kong restaurateur and bon vivant Bonnae Gokson, who’s also known as the “Queen of Confections” and has penned a book about wedding cakes — so you know you’re in good hands. The cake boutique, which has three branches in Hong Kong, is known for unique (and oft-copied) creations that come with an extraordinary amount of detail. Whether you want a classic tiered cake or a vibrant rose-inspired creation, Ms B’s Cakery can make it happen. The cakes can be made in a range of fondant flavours — vanilla butter cake and pistachio, or cafe au lait and chocolate, are just some of the options.
PENNEY PANG DESIGNER CAKES
Chartered accountant-turned-cake maker Penney Pang honed her craft at bakeries and sugarcraft courses in Hong Kong, Australia and the UK before opening up her own shop. It offers classic, oriental or contemporary wedding cakes, which are customised to the couples’ tastes. The classics feature details like monograms and edible sequins, while oriental cakes are finished in edible gold, come with Chinese porcelain patterns, or the “double happiness” Chinese character. The contemporary cakes are slightly unexpected in the best way — there’s one with the bride and groom dressed in cartoon costumes.
PHOENIX SWEETS
Phoenix Sweets specialises in bridal and birthday cakes and offers extensive wedding services. The creations are English butter cakes, with tailor-made ones starting at 6” in diameter. The shop’s wedding package gets you everything from cakes, cupcakes and cookies and a sweets table, and setting up services can also be arranged. Meanwhile, Phoenix Sweets also offers handmade sugar flowers, which can be a good option as a cake topper instead of edible real flowers — which, the cake maker says, can be hard to find in Hong Kong.
SUGAR ME HK
Sugar Me began with one mission: to bring cakes with wow-factor, and storytelling behind their design. From elegant, floral-inspired buttercream cakes to personalised sweet treats that depict the couple’s hobbies and favourite cartoon characters, this is where you’ll find them.
THE CAKERY
If you’re after a healthy, guilt-free cake, The Cakery should be top of your list. The cake maker, which has shops in Central and Causeway Bay, is all about conscious living — and there are organic, gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options available.
THE SWEET SPOT
Inspired by everything from a bridal gown and marble patterns to rose gardens, The Sweet Spot’s ingenious designs couldn’t be more photogenic. All cakes are made with the shop’s signature yellow sponge, though other requests can also be done. Custom cakes cost $850 and up.
VIVE
The brainchild of cake designer Vivien Lau, Vive is known for sumptuous, colourful creations with rich flavours. Vive offers wedding consultations, offering up to three cake flavours for sampling and working with couples to create the perfect confection.
